After a rained out round 2, the Cavs made the drive north to Laurel for their round 3 T20 matchup against Rising Stars CC. James predictably lost the toss and we bowled first. The opposition got away to a quick start before Toqeer snagged the first wicket caught by Mr. Reliable Kushal. Tight bowling from Chris Kearns (1/30 off 4) and Kushal (1/16 off 4) got the run rate back under control, and our fielding was exceptional with great runouts from the deep by Bevan and James, as well as a solid effort behind the stumps from Alan who had 2 stumpings off the loopy left arm pies offered up by Captain Watt. However wides were our worst enemy (27 for the innings!) allowing the Stars to be all out for 140 in the final over.
Baber (1) and Bevan (15) opened up the run chase, but a constant stream of wickets (Kushal 16, Dan 6 and Jimmy Delany 0) saw the Cavs struggling at 5/58 after 8.4 overs and in desperate need of a steadying partnership. That’s exactly what we got with Alan (15 off 20 balls) who combined well with James (49 off 42) to steady the ship and combine for a crucial 60 run partnership that left us well placed at 6/118 after 16 overs. However, just when things were looking comfortable, enter the #Cavscollapse with 4 wickets falling in 9 balls, with Alan departing and James chopping on (pictured below), followed by Cal (his 4th straight duck and 3rd LBW in a row dating back to last season!), and Chris (5) leaving us in disarray at 9/123 after 17.3 overs. All seemed lost, but no one told this to number 10 and 11 Toqeer and Ayaz, who both played magnificently for an 18-run partnership, with Ayaz (4* off 4 balls) hitting the winning runs with 1 ball to spare! Cavs get the win 9/141 after 19.5 overs!
Man of the match went to Toqeer for his last wicket heroics scoring 12 off 11 balls (including a huge 6!) to back up his excellent spell of bowling (4/19 of 4 overs). An exciting match and a fantastic team effort that sets up a great start to the season! For the second game in a row it went down to the wire and we left it late to sneak a win which leaves us 2/2 and second on the T20 ladder. Great effort Lads!
