Southern Cavaliers Cricket Club Won by super over

Match report In one of the strangest games of cricket in some time - one for which '‪#‎cricketinamerica‬' barely scratches the surface - Southern Cavaliers claimed their first win of the season on Saturday with a farcical and controversial, yet thrilling, T20 win over A Money Matter at Mark Twain Oval on Saturday.

The Cavaliers won the game by 2 runs in a Super Over, after scores were tied at 99 after the regulation overs. It's believed to be the first ever Super Over win in the history of the league. The fact the game went beyond the allotted 20 overs was a source of serious controversy after non-striker Thilina Silva was given run out off the final ball while trying to scamper a bye for what would have been the winning run. He was orginally given not out by the square leg umpire, but after some world-class tantrums from the opposition, the umpire overruled the decision and gave him out, sending the game to a Super Over - in which each team batted for an over to settle the game.

Playing his first game for the club, Gordon Brown and man of the match Finton Sugumar, claimed 11 off the Cavaliers' Super Over, buttressed by Brown's glorious cover drive for six off the third ball. In the Money Matter over, Brown proved difficult to get away with his excellent off-spinners. Needing 3 to win off the last ball, Brown clean bowled Rafi Hashimi to silence the opposition and claim a belatedly well-earned win.

Chasing 100 to win, Cavaliers batted unevenly, with opener David Clarke (19 off 39) anchoring the innings after the fall of early wickets. At 60 for 5, the game was in the balance, but the combination of Sugumar, who played some glorious shots for a run-a-ball 29 not out, and prodigal son Aaron Flavell (16 off 19) batted smartly to take the team to the brink of victory, before the drama of the final ball.

Earlier, the Cavaliers had bowled and caught well in the field, none better than Brown's speccy on the boundary that instantly became a contender for Catch of the Year. Some strange umpiring decisions - warning an off spinner for dangerous bowling and issuing 18 wides in fewer than 17 overs - helped inflate the Money Matter scorecard. Silva took 3 for 20, while Brown and young star Avinash Thakkar each claimed two wickets.
