Southern Cavaliers Cricket Club 1st XI v Renegades Cricket Club on Sat 16 May 2015 at 11:00 AM
Southern Cavaliers Cricket Club Won by 65 runs

Match report Southern Cavaliers Cricket Club faced their 1st double header weekend without a string of players who were all graduating this weekend.

We first played Renegades, after losing the toss on a very warm day, bowled and fielded well on a very difficult pitch. Many of our batsman took a guard multiple yards outside of their crease to eliminate the prodigious swing and uneven bounce against the pace bowlers. The strategy proved successful as we moved to 71 for 3 from 15 overs and looked set to score 200 plus. However, our usual middle order frailties returned again and we were all bowled out for 136. A very defendable but disappointing total give our good start. Only James Watt and Thilina Silva managed to get above 20, with James scoring another 31. Much analysis needed as to why nobody in the club can get beyond 31!

With our strong bowling attack and excellent fielding, we felt we could defend the total. Brian Barrie bowled with his usual pace and skill. He continued to show, that even at 46, he is one of the most feared bowlers in the league. He was ably supported by James Watt, who opened the bowling with left arm spin in an attempt to pressure the top order on a pitch that was turning sharply. Both bowlers picked up regular wickets and Renegades were 21 for 7 within 9 overs. After a brief fightback, Thilina Silva and Craig Browne came on to wrap up the tail, with 1 and 2 wickets respectively. Congrats to James and Brian for winning joint man-of-the-match award.

Top performances:
James Watt – 31 and 5/26 from 8 overs (including the maiden 5 wicket haul in the history of the club)
Brian Barrie – 2/12 from 6 incisive overs
Thilina Silva – 22 and 1/4 from 1 over
Craig Brown – 2/21 from 3.5 overs
Neil Hickey – a composed 14* with the tail which took us from 93/7 to a defendable 136

Excellent all round team performance, with no dropped catches in the field and every run being contested when we bowled. May the high standards in the field continue.

The 2nd match on Sunday was rained off. The 90 degree heat from the day before had depleted energy reserves, so it was maybe for the best.
No games over the Memorial Day weekend. Next game on 31 May. Thanks all from all over the US and the world for all the support. It is very much appreciated.
